How to Write a Blurb (For baby authors)!

Writing a blurb can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never had to do it before. Hopefully the following will help.

What makes a good blurb?

So you’ve written an awesome book and you can’t wait to share it with the world. You might already have a beautiful cover, or you could just be working that out.

Then you realise that you need to write a blurb?

What is a blurb?

In simple terms, this is your elevator pitch to your reader about your book. You are selling the story to the audience. It’s designed to be short and snappy, something to draw readers in.

Some tips!

1 - Who are your characters and why are readers going to be drawn to them? If you write plus size leads, let people know. If the male lead is a grumpy but loveable alphahole, now is the time to tell everyone.

2 - What is the setting? Fantasy? Modern? City? The surface of the moon? Location is important.

3 - What is happening? Don’t put everything down here, this isn’t a synopsis. If you put the words ‘and then’ in your blurb, it’s already too long. This is the perfect time to mention any tropes you know your readers are going to be into!

4 - Short and sweet! The best blurbs are ones which simply let potential readers know who the story is about, where it happens, and leaves the rest open.

Last tip, and most important, is don’t be afraid to look for help! Ask other authors for their opinions. Workshop the blurb before deciding on the final version. There is an entire community of creative people out there who are often more than happy to help. Don’t feel you have to spend a fortune on a professional service, especially when you are a baby author!

Hope that helps!
